Dear Members & Guests:

MEETING REMINDER

If you haven't rsvp'd for this meeting, please consider doing so by following the link below.

At our September TAG meeting we are pleased to have Dan Whittle, owner of Patent Leverage LLC speak to us about Patents. Patents are one of the most valuable forms of intellectual property for some small tech firms.  Yet for other technology companies, patents actually provide little or no tangible commercial benefit.  Is this due to differences in the company management processes, their product marketplaces or inherent characteristics of the individual patents?  As is the case with tools of any type, basic knowledge of how to select and use the right tool under different circumstances is a prerequisite for success.  Misuse of a tool increases the potential for injury or other costly damage.  For both individuals and businesses, these risks generally increase with ignorance of a tool’s operating principles and the application environment.

Dan will provide a general overview on strategies for protecting and commercially exploiting patents and other forms of intellectual property such as trade secrets, copyrights and trademarks. Practical tips will be presented using examples from local inventors and businesses.

About Dan Whittle
Dan Whittle has over 20 years of technology and product development experience in both the technical trenches and management.  Dan started his corporate career at IBM after receiving his Ph.D. in Physics from Penn.  He moved to Bellingham in 1996 to work with Cymbolic Sciences, where he became President in 1999.  His last corporate position was Sr. Vice-President of R&D and Manufacturing for Oce Display Graphics Systems, a division of the $3B Dutch multinational.  Growing interest in the commercial aspects of intellectual property led Dan to become a registered patent agent in 2003.  He founded Patent Leverage LLC (www.patentleverage.com) to bring his practical commercial and technical expertise to smaller enterprises that can’t justify in-house specialized patent strategy expertise.
